Bespoke Process & FAQs

Usually I recommend meeting to have a chat about what kind of design you're after, discuss your options for various metals etc and also chat about ring size. It's also helpful to know your budget and I can advise accordingly. After a consultation and narrowing down what you’d like, I can provide quotes (and sketches if necessary) based on what we've discussed. Usually from signing off a design the whole process takes around 8-10 weeks (but I can sometimes work quicker if you have a specific date in mind).

Where possible I use Fairtrade gold - large companies have an additional mark made to notify you of this when getting their Fairtrade gold hallmarked. I am on the Goldsmiths' Fairtrade scheme for small businesses and this extra mark does not apply to me. So, the gold will be Fairtrade but your hallmark will be a regular one - my maker's mark, a castle for the Edinburgh Assay Office, the metal stamp of quality and a letter for the year that they are made. Alternatively, the other gold I used is made from recycled alloys.

Payment: I ask for 50% to get the work started, with the balance due upon completion of your piece.

Can I visit your studio?

Yes - this is by appointment only. Please get in touch to arrange this. I am also happy to meet on weekends and evenings when weekdays aren’t possible due to work commitments. At the moment I am doing a lot of commissions via email and Zoom too - get in touch if you’d like to discuss this further.

Can I have a bespoke ring re-sized?

Yes. For bespoke rings a first sizing costs £40. However, it’s much easier to get the ring size right to begin with. Certain styles of ring have a tolerance to being sized, it may not be possible more than 1 or 2 sizes up or down. If you aren’t able to meet in person, I can post out sizers or you can let me know your size if you have been sized elsewhere. Please note, with either of these options the sizing may not be accurate as I have not sized you in person.

How long does it take?

Usually from signing off a design, it takes around 8-10 weeks as an estimate. This is subject to change and you will be notified at the time of discussing your piece. If you need something done quickly, this can usually be accommodated depending on the piece.

What metals do you use?

I work in silver and gold, and depending on the design I can also use platinum. I use recycled or Fairtrade gold.

Is a deposit required?

Yes, I charge a £100 design fee depending on the commission. This is deductible from your order once the design has been agreed.

Where is my piece hallmarked?

All bespoke pieces are hallmarked at the Edinburgh Assay Office - this ensures your quality of the metal used, as well as a stamp with my maker’s mark and a letter stamp for the year your piece was made.

Can I commission a piece without knowing a ring size?

Yes, this is possible but it’s worth bearing in mind that certain designs can only be sized up or down around 1 or 2 sizes. I will advise on this when discussing a design. So it’s better to know the ring size or have a rough idea.

Do you do everything inhouse?

I design and make everything from my studio in Glasgow (whether it’s hand carving wax or making from raw bullion, or depending on the design it may be created by CAD) - however I utilise the expertise and services of other key people for certain jobs when required. I use a UK casting house who supplies Fairtrade and recycled gold, and I only use gemstones from suppliers who hold high standards in ethical and traceable gemstone sourcing.
